Calise & Sam
The Barn on Six – Falkland, BC
The Ceremony and reception took place at @thebarnonsix an elegant yet rustic venue that Calise’s brother and sister had built in Falkland, BC in 2020. The barn is located alongside the creek that runs through the Six Mile Creek Valley. Surrounded by open pasture, the barn is majestic against the red cliffs that loom in the distance and the blue mountains that enclose the entire valley.
DIY Projects for the day:
- Arranging bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages–this was so fun, although it was a lot of work! We loved getting to be creative with the look we wanted for the day.
- Hand-cut poplar and fir slabs for the plate settings and centerpieces on each table, and a birch ring box handmade by Calise’s brother, Jacob
- Seating arrangements wax-sealed to an antique mirror in the Barn
- Traditional Italian and Argentinian cookies home-made by Sam’s mom, Franca (Italian) and Calise’s Grandma, Lidia (Argentinia)
Inspiration behind the Day + Design
The Day was inspired by the valley where the wedding took place and where Calise spent most of her time on the family ranch. The weddings design was also influenced by Calise’s love for magic and all things fairytale! The slate blue and burgundy colour palette specifically drew from the mountains and wildlife in the area. Eryngium, chamomile, and agonis were chosen for the florals to create a whimsical forest ambiance throughout the day.
Couple’s personal story:
We met at the Faith Mission Bible Camp during the summer of 2019, and we clicked almost instantly. However, we didn’t get super close until 2020 and we started dating during that next summer. We were long-distance for eight months as Sam moved to Saskatchewan to complete a year of Bible College there. After returning, we continued to date and attend university in Kelowna, and Sam proposed on a hike in Kelowna in October, 2021. As third-year students, we planned our wedding amidst midterms, finals, and major projects over the next seven months! On May 7th, 2022, surrounded by friends, family, and the mountains, we said our vows and began the next chapter of our lives together
Favourite Memories of the Day:
- Praying together before the ceremony, although Sam confesses that he accidentally snuck a glance at Calise
- Seeing the cold, rainy weather subside just long enough for the outdoor ceremony, although it picked right back up afterwards!
- Laughing when the stale mini-loaf of communion bread proved impossible to break
- Drinking bubble tea with our bridal party just after we said “I do”!
- Being so loved on and supported by our wonderful friends and family
Music Choices:
- The bridal party made their entrance to Acoustic Heartstrings’ cover of “Steal My Girl”, a favorite of the Bride’s
- The Bride walked down the aisle to Sam Yung’s piano version of “The Night We Met”, one of the Groom’s favorite songs
- The Bride and Groom shared their first dance to “Golden Thing” by Cody Simpson, the first song they had danced to together nearly two years before
- The playlist for the day featured indie acoustic love songs and string covers of popular song
Advice for Brides planning now:
- Remember that your wedding is only one day and your marriage will be for your lifetime! Don’t let stress about little details create issues in your relationship with your fiancé or your families. At the end of the day, it’s about the commitment you two are making, not the flowers, food, or finding the “perfect” dress. Prioritize the things that you will value most in the years after your special day.
